9 Questions to Align Your Marketing Strategy with Sales

During a recession, marketing is typically the first department to get a budget cut - but it shouldn’t.

As the head of marketing, you prevent this from happening by showing measurable results of how your marketing efforts affect the finances of the company.

In  a recent article from Adobe, their CMO made a remarkable statement:

If a CMO wants credit for marketing’s contribution to revenue, the CMO must form a strong bond with the CFO, set expectations of what marketing success looks like, and work closely with the CFO to gain trust.
— Sam Melnick, CMO at Adobe

To set the expectations of what success looks like regarding the sales of a company, here are nine questions to start asking.

9 Questions to Help Align Marketing with Sales

  1. What are our company’s sales goals?

  2. How are we tracking the analytics on marketing?

  3. What are the questions that we frequently get asked?

  4. If we get any complaints or returns, what are the reasons?

  5. Why did we see a spike in sales on this particular day?

  6. What type of content gets the highest engagement rate? What receives the lowest?

  7. Where does our customer hang out?

  8. Are the platforms we are on driving traffic to our website?

  9. What’s been the return on investment with different marketing strategies?

By answering these questions, you will be drafting a winning marketing strategy that aligns with sales and gaining the trust of your CFO.
